Dolphins Head Coach Adam Gase hired his Father-In-Law as a consultant on Friday. His father-in-law is long time NFL coach Joe Vitt. Vitt has been in the NFL since 1979 spending the majority of those years as a linebackers coach. Vitt was also the interim head coach for the Saints in 2012 after the “Bountygate Scandal” where head coach Sean Payton was suspended for the entire 2012 season. Vitt was also suspended that year and had to miss the first 6 regular season games but was the head coach the final 10 games.

There was talk when Vance Joseph left for Denver and linebackers coach Matt Burke was promoted to defensive coordinator that Vitt would replace Burke as the Dolphins linebackers coach but Gase went in a different direction. Now Gase has brought on his wife’s father in a “consultant” role and not part of the coaching staff. I don’t expect Vitt to have a major role with the organization in any way. To me Vitt is someone who might sit in on defensive meetings and give some thoughts or opinions but clearly be someone who is in the background and not have a big voice in how things are run. Vitt may also just be a good sounding board for Matt Burke who is a first time defensive coordinator and be someone Burke can bounce ideas off as well.

Jennifer Gase, the daughter of Joe Vitt, married Adam Gase about 9 years ago and they have three children together. There is a funny anecdote that Adam tells that Joe Vitt gave him permission to marry his daughter the very first time he ever met him.
