Quarterback Lamar Jackson is at Dolphins camp in Davie today. Dan Marino is there too, working with Jackson I’m told.— Craig Mish (@CraigMish) April 6, 2018
Would have loved to of blogged this yesterday but the world of
competitive high school baseball and eating wings is a fierce one even in the
still frozen mountains of north east PA. You know how it is.

The
Dolphins cracked the code that is figuring out a way to schedule a meeting with
the ever elusive Lamar Jackson and naturally brought in one of the stars from
Ace Ventura Pet Detective and frequent thrower of the football in Miami Dan
Marino to show the young man the fine art of quick releases and what it takes
to make the NFL Top 10 Most Mobile QBs. I love when I hear that Dan is working
with some young QB because apparently, I’m supposed to care more about it
because he’s working with them as opposed to anyone else. Yeah, I realize how
important Dan still is to the franchise, but I bet he’s worked with all the top
QBs and even more.

I’ve
been on record, and by record, I mean when some friends of mine have talked
about who we want our teams to draft, that I would be all for Miami drafting
Jackson in the 2nd round if he’s still available. Today, that seems to be a
huge IF because all you’re hearing about is how there will be 50 QBs drafted in
the first round. But, it’s important to understand that nobody knows anything
right now and taking any of the talking heads out their “insight” as
gospel is something I would advise against. Essentially, if you wanted too, you
could find someone somewhere claiming to have heard talk about all scenarios. It
does seem that the top 4 QBs will be all going in the top 10. Would I be
shocked if one of them slip to Miami at 11? Not at all, but there are enough
teams in the top 10 that need a QB that are likely landing spots for the top 4
QBs.

I know
some have serious reservations about Jackson. That he’s more athlete than he is
quarterback. I’m not here to get into that rhetoric and what that could
ultimately mean about your ideology. If you want to go down that rabbit hole go
check out First Take or its clone Undisputed if you can find when it’s on. We
all know Jackson can fly, we all know how dangerous he can be on the football
field with the ball in his hands. We know he won the Heisman two years ago. His
stats in college are beyond video game numbers. He threw for 9,043 yards and
69(nice) TDs. He also ran for a casual 4,132 yards with 50 TDs. The guy was
everything for Louisville. But, folks had and still have doubts about his
throwing mechanics.

Then there was this throw that I saw live that
made me loosen my tie and I wasn’t even wearing one

The idea that Lamar is a project is probably a fair one but just
about every QB that comes out in my estimation is a project until their number
gets called. Then they are the starter and the chips fall where they may. The
guy makes plays with his feet. He has that club in the bag, but he also can
throw it. I don’t think he will ever be a methodical, pick you a part up and
down the field type of player but I feel he will be certainly capable of
leading many scoring drives. The key is, and it’s one I feel often gets
misplaced, whoever drafts him, are they going to let him be Lamar Jackson or
are they going to try and have him be someone he’s not and sort of leave his
athletic ability on the shelf to collect dust? RG3, Kaepernick who have similar
skill sets but their coaches wanted them to be classic, standard QBs and they
got hurt orshunned by the league thought to be incapable of
throwing the ball good. Russell Wilson on the other hand, his skills
highlighted in the Seattle offense. Pete lets him do what he must and if that
means running around then so be it. I would like to think Gase and company
wouldn’t suppress Jackson’s skill set because they want them to adjust to their
system. Be smarter than that.

We already
have a huge, massive amount of evidence that Lamar Jackson is all about playing
for Miami with him liking a picture on Twitter back in November.

Don’t know if Miami will be trying to trade down to get one of the
top 4 QBs or staying at 11 hoping one of them fall to them but it certainly
seems very possible that Miami will be drafting a QB with one of their early
picks. We all know Tannehill isn’t long for Miami, regardless of what Gase or
anyone says. I’d love for Miami to take Jackson and then must insert him into
the lineup mid-year and then he scorches the Earth and Miami has this real
potent, score at any moment type offense. It is nice to have that kind of
situation happen to Miami just once in my lifetime.

Absolutely NOT! 57% comp pct in college = FAILURE in the NFL. Wide receiver + kick returner is what he'll be in the NFL. Sorry!
You have lost your mind look at the numbers he put up while he was in college
Horrible take "Anonymous"… And don't just look at the numbers but watch the tape, the most important attribute Jackson brings to an offense and team is that he wins games. He can do it through the air and with his legs… and that 57% completion percentage you are speaking of, how many of those were receiver drops? (Research before typing, it will do wonders.)
"Robert Melendez" Tebow did more than Jackson ever did by winning a National Championship and almost another and won a Heisman and he is just as accurate or even more accurate than Jackson and more durable than Jackson will ever be and where is he now? PLEASE DO NOT TAKE LAMAR "MATCH STICK" JACKSON. Because he will end up just like Vick and RG3 after a few hits to his skinny a$$.
Did you just compare Lamar Jackson to Tim Tebow? Tebow was way over drafted and everyone knows that! and Mike Vick wasn't injury prone until after he came back.
I am not for them drafting Lamar Jackson. I think if Mason Rudolph falls to them in round 2, they'll take him.
not w/ the 11th pick, no thank you
He's a faster E.J. Manual! Won't play QB in the NFL! Let some other team take that risk.
We need a playmaker at quarterback can make things happen
I wouldn't take him with the 11th either but I'd be all good with him in the 2nd if he's still there. I realize I should of had that information in the blog. Credit to me for seeing that mistake and taking ownership of it
Jackson's a wildcard on where he can get drafted, but I think he can go as high as the teens in round one (due to potential) or around the Saints pick in Round 1 or fall into round 2, where teams will jump at him. For Jackson, he has that special potential where he can do it in the air and on the ground… he'll have flaws as does every rookie quarterback but you are not asking him to start year one. Let him sit a year or two and watch how the pro game is played and learn from his new Head Coach. On the right team with the right coach (Saints? Dolphins?), Jackson can be just as electrifying as he was in college.
I agree with all of that
Horrible idea.
Outside throws (a staple in the NFL) are terrible, velocity is weak and can't get through his progressions. Small base with a thin frame to boot. No thanks.
Oh, he can run the ball and would make some exciting plays but that is not an NFL quality QB in the making.
No, no, no, no! He is both inaccurate and slight of build which has always spelled disaster in the NFL.
Jackson looks like he can be a pretty good QB. I doubt he'll be on the board in 2nd round, looks like he'll go mid to late 1st. If we were to trade back in 1st round I still wouldn't take him. Whoever we draft at QB will sit behind Tannehill. We don't have the luxury of sitting our 1st round selection. We have a major hole at LB & TE. I don't see any TE worth taking in 1st round, so I would take a LB. Either Roquan Smith or Trumaine Edmunds at 11. If both are gone than I would trade back & draft either Leighton Vander Esch or Rashaan Evans. Than grab the best available TE with the 42nd pick. Now we've taken care of our 2 biggest needs early. We could Take a QB in 3rd such as Kyle Lauletta or Luke Falk. Than we could Take a RB like Kalen Ballage or Akrum Wadley in the 4th round. And Another LB like Josey Jewell or Shaquem Griffen with our next 4th rounder. Than best player available rest of draft.
If the Dolphins were going to grab Lamar they would HAVE to also make sure they got a playmaking TE to support Lamar.
Matt I am sorry you are so off course on this…. he is RG 3 revisited… he will spend more time on IR than on the field… you can't come close to comparing him to wilson… Jackson has small hips and legs that are thin in comparison to the likes of wilson…. most of Jackson weight is on his upper body. If you look at Russell Wilson's body, he has similar legs to a rb which can withstand the punishment of running… RG 3 had thinner legs and was prone to leg and lower body injuries…that is the lower body type Jackson has… even look at cam Newton legs and you will see they are massive in comparison to Jackson. Also you are NOT going to be able to make that amt of muscular gain by working out… it's been proven time and time .. that is partially genetics and development starting at an early age… before the end of the 1st year, he will be injured if he plays…
Something intrigues me about Lamar Jackson…he isn't the prototypical QB. He sure is exciting to watch. I don't think the Dolphins will take him. Not sure he is the type of QB Gase likes…but…if anyone can develop him it is Gase…might take a year or 2 but I believe if he is worked with he may be successful. I saw Tannehill make some throws in his first year with Gase that he previously was unable to make. Started to show some real nice touch on the ball with wheel routes. And deep ball improved. I am sure whoever the Dolphins pick for QB Gase will have full authority over and I trust that , it is his specialty.
