2008

Phillip Merling defense end out of Clemson was selected by the Dolphins with the 32nd pick. Merling played for the Dolphins from 2008-2011. Merling only appeared in 47 games for the Dolphins only starting in three of them. He finished his Dolphins career with66 combined tackles, and 3.5 sacks. Merling also spent a year in Green Bay and Washington after leaving Miami. Needless to say, this was a wasted 2nd rounder.

Chad Henne quarterback out of Michigan was selected with the 57th overall in 2008. Henne played in Miami from 2008-2011. In four years Henne posted a 13-18 record with the Dolphins. Henne racked up 7,114 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions. Henne left the Dolphins to play for the Jaguars and has since become the backup of the Chiefs. Like Merling Henne’s time in Miami was short and a wasted 2nd rounder.

2009
Pat White quarterback out of West Virginia was selected 44th in the draft. Not much to say on White he only last one year with Miami. White is probably best known for the hit that rocked his world against the Steelers. A hit that was so hard it shattered his helmet. White was the second quarterback taken in consecutive years by the Dolphins in the second round. White’s time came to an abrupt end and was the third wasted second-round pick by Miami.

Sean Smith cornerback out of Utah was selected 61st in the draft. Smith played in Miami from 2009-2012. In his time in Miami, he started in 56 games. He had 180 tackles and 5 interceptions while in Miami. When Smith left the Dolphins, he played for the Chiefs and the Raiders. Like 1st round picks Miami has had a lot of trouble getting second-round picks to stay longer than there the first contact.

2010
Koa Misi linebacker out of Utah was selected 40th overall in the draft. For the second straight year, Miami took a player from Utah. Misi played for the Dolphins from 2010-2016. He played in 84 games starting in 72 of them. Misi finished his career with 253 tackles, 12 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. Koa Misi was the first one on this list to get a second contract with the Dolphins. Unfortunately, injuries brought his career to an end with the Fins. Misi had a decent career while in Miami up until injuries plagued his career.

2011
Daniel Thomas halfback out of Kansas State was the 62nd pick of the draft. Thomas played in Miami from 2011-2014. He played in 52 games but just started in 3 of those. He rushed for 1480 yards and ran for 10 touchdowns in Miami. Daniel Thomas did not earn a second contract with the team either as he could never get it going in Miami as a running back.

2012
Jonathan Martin tackle out of Stanford was selected 42nd overall in the draft. Martin was in Miami from 2012-2013. Unfortunately, Martin will not be remembered for anything good he did in the NFL (Oh wait did he do any good). Martin will be remembered for his time in the NFL for the bullying scandal that rocked the Dolphins organization. Martin and fellow Dolphins player Richie Incognito were the main two involved in the bullying scandal. Martin was eventually traded to the 49ers where he ended his career. Martin may have been the worst second-round pick in recent history. Obviously, Martin didn’t get a second contract from the team.

2013
Jamar Taylor cornerback out of Bosie State was selected 54th overall in the draft. Taylor played in Miami from 2013-2015 where he played in 33 games and started in 9 of them. Taylor never really had what it took to be a everyday corner in Miami and was traded to Cleveland in 2016. Taylor is on a long list of 2nd round players that didn’t pan out in Miami.

2014
Jarvis Landry wide receiver out of LSU was selected by Miami with the 63rd overall pick. Landry has been in Miami from 2014-2017. Landry was the heart of the offense ever since he stepped foot on the field. Landry played in 64 games and started in 57 of those games. Landry finished with 400 catches, 4038 yards, and 22 touchdowns. Unfortunately, Miami and Landry couldn’t come to terms on a second contract. Landry was a 3x pro bowler while in Miami. This offseason Miami traded Landry to the Cleveland Browns. In most fans opinion Landry was probably the best second-round pick Miami has chosen in quite some time.

2015
Jordan Phillips defense tackle out of Oklahoma was selected 52nd overall. In Phillips 3 years in Miami, he has played in44 games and started 26 of them. Phillips has 1 career interception, 4.5 sacks, and 37 tackles. Is Phillips poised to take on a bigger role with the loss of Suh?

2016
Xavien Howard cornerback out of Baylor was selected 38th overall. Howard has played in 23 games in his first 2 seasons collecting 4 interceptions. Two of the four came off the right arm of TB12. What does Howard have to do to come to an elite shutdown corner for the Dolphins? Howard has the potential to become one of Miamis best second-round picks of all time. Howard is still too early in his career to call boom or bust. But he’s definitely looking like a boom!

2017
Raekwon McMillian, a linebacker out of Ohio State was the 54th pick of the draft. Unfortunately, we don’t have anything to really talk about with him yet. McMillan tore his ACL early in preseason and missed his whole rookie season. How will he bounce back from his season-ending injury? What kind of impact will he have on defense this season? Still too early for boom or bust category.

2018
Mike Gesicki a tight end out of Penn State was selected 42nd in the draft. Gesicki was a very solid tight end in college will that translate to the pro level? How long will it take Gesicki to become the starter? How many touchdowns will he have in his rookie season? Will he be one of Ryan’s favorite targets? Time will tell if he will be a boom or bust.
