Man, coming into work today feels so good after an impressive win. The win feels even better when the Patriots lose on the same day. When many experts predicted the Dolphins to be cellar dwellers all season, the Phins are off to a good start. Let’s not start counting the days to the AFC championship game, however let’s get excited for the results in the first two weeks. The old Dolphins teams would have coughed up the game against the Jets, these Dolphins made big plays at big points in the game.

For example, TJ McDonald’s early interception and run back set up the first score of the game. Kenyan Drake scores up the gut on a 3rd and 1 from the Jets 6-yard line. The old Dolphins team would have settled for a field goal. Out with the old, in with the new. Later on in the 2nd quarter when the Jets were driving the ball, a flying around Kiko Alonso stripped the ball and recovered by Raekwon McMillan. A few plays later, Quarterback Ryan Tannehill found newcomer Albert Wilson on a crossing route for a Touchdown. 14-0 lead from two Jets turnovers. Out with the old, in with the new. The Jets got the ball back and a quick 3 and out helped by a sack by new Dolphin Robert Quinn. On the next series, when they usually sit on the ball content being up in the game, Tannehill found AJ Derby for a 19-yard laser to make it 20-0. Out with the old, in with the new. A big tackle on the 1-yard line by Reshad Jones closed out the half for the Phins.

Starting the 3rd quarter as expected, the Jets drove the field and scored a touchdown. 20-6 Dolphins with the missed extra point on both sides. The next series, Tannehill fumbled and recovered by the Jets. The beads of sweat start to drip off my head. Before I got a chance to yell at the TV, a beautiful toe- tapping interception by Xavien Howard stalled the Jets drive one play into it. Previous years, it would have been a blown assignment and a easy touchdown for the opposing team. Out with the old, in with the new.

The last quarter of the game with the Dolphins clinging on to a 20-12 lead, they closed out the game. A 3rd and 19 conversion by the ageless, fresh legged, Frank Gore sealed the victory. The Jets never got the ball back and Miami escaped with the win. When was the last time the Dolphins sat on the ball for 6 minutes and let the clock tick away? Out with the old, in with the new.

This week the Dolphins host the win-less Oakland Raiders led Jon Gruden. This game scares me, a 0-2 team with its back against the wall. The Raiders are traveling to the east coast and will be playing hopefully in 90 plus degree weather on Sunday. In years past, in a very winnable game our old Dolphins have let us down. With a win on Sunday it would be 3-0. Out with the old, in with the new.
