There was a rumor back in the early 2015 season that I want to talk a little bit about. The rumor was that Dolphins head coach at the time, Joe Philbin, didn’t want Ryan Tannehill and like with all rumors where there is a flame, there is fire. Because a few days later, there were reports coming out that Philbin wanted to draft Derek Carr in the 2014 draft.

Please understand. I am not trying to call anyone a liar. I’m just a fan on the outside looking. This is coming from my own personal recollection. But, this story was really hard to buy into.

The 2015 Dolphins season was going a lot like the 2014 season was. Dolphins were 1-2 with 2 straight losses.  So, the team wasn’t doing really well and it’s not surprising to me that something like this got started because there were Anti-Philbin people still left in the building. By that I mean, that Philbin was in his second year with a new GM and OC. Plus, Owner Steve Ross went out and hired Mike Tannenbaum to be Executive Vice President of Operations. So, Philbin was having to deal with new people and I’m sure after the 2013 locker-room scandal, there were those still there that felt Philbin should have already been gone.

Let’s look at the first part of this rumor. The idea that Philbin never wanted Tannehill as his QB seems absolutely preposterous to me. Maybe, he had to buy into Tannehill a little bit from his buddy, and OC for the Dolphins at the time, Mike Sherman but Philbin could have overruled him. Philbin was given a lot of power by Ross. Really, the only guy over Philbin was at the time Dolphins GM, Jeff Ireland. For those that don’t know, Mike Sherman was the Head Coach over at Texas A&M where Tannehill attended school. But, my point is Tannehill was Philbin’s choice.

The second part of the rumor was that Philbin wanted to draft Derek Carr. This is where the rumor starts to get really whacked out for me. Why would Philbin who was an offensive-minded coach give up on Tannehill after 2 seasons? That’s unheard of. More than that, it’s just downright stupid. I get it if it’s 7th round pick Brandon Doughty who hasn’t played in a single NFL game and is just not moving up the depth chart but come on! I don’t care who you are. No coach would do that. Not even Joe Philbin.

The rumor got quiet till’ summer rolled around, and the Dolphins hired Adam Gase to be their new head coach. Armando Salguero, of the Miami Herald, had written an article about it, stating that Philbin found out he was going to lose his OC Sherman, so he threw QB Ryan Tannehill under the bus, so to speak.

I believe part of this story to be true. Let me explain. I don’t think Philbin was ever against Tannehill or any of his other players and in all the years watching him coach this team, he never, not once, struck me as a douche-bag. This guy was a coach. That’s all he wanted to do it seems and I think that ended up working against him.

Getting back to my point, he was a classy guy through and through and went out the same way he was brought in.

What I think happened is, when he found out Sherman was going to get fired, probably was a conversation between Philbin and Ross is he used Tannehill as an example to what the offensive woes were, not blame him for the entire unit. Which makes a lot more sense to me, but of course, when you have a disconnect between Philbin and the front office, things will get taken out of context and the media will just run with it.
