It’s been a week now since the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Adam Gase and now the names coming into focus are Kris Richard, Dennis Allen, Brian Flores, Eric Bieniemy, and Darren Rizzi. Those aren’t exactly big-name coaches most of them haven’t been head coaches. The Dolphins job is the least attractive job because the team has no quarterback and the roster is going to be blown up. The hottest names out there is Mike McCarthy and John Harbaugh. McCarthy isn’t interested in the Dolphins and Harbaugh is still has one year left on his contract with the Baltimore Ravens even if he wanted to come the Dolphins would have to give up at least a first round pick, which isn’t appealing for a team that needs draft assets. This search shouldn’t be about finding the big-name guy, but rather the right guy.
This weekend I watched the Indianapolis Colts crush the Houston Texans with their first-year head coach Frank Reich. Remember last year when the Colts agreed in principle with Josh McDaniels to become their coach only to back out in the 11th hour. It got me thinking what if McDaniels didn’t change his mind would the Colts be where they are now? We will never know, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise for the Colts because Reich has done a terrific job with the Colts. The same can be said for Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn. Two years ago, Lynn wasn’t a hot name on everyone’s list, but the Chargers hired him. The Chargers have had talent, but not able to put it all together on the field and in two years Lynn has the Chargers two wins from the Super Bowl. The New England Patriots were teetering around .500 in the late 1990’s and then found their guy in Bill Belichick and he failed in his first stop in Cleveland and we all know the rest. The New Orleans Saints were a franchise devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and were thinking of relocating the team. Then they hired Sean Payton in 2006 and the rest is history. They won the Super Bowl in 2009 and are on the verge of going back. These guys were the right coaches for those teams. They weren’t big name hires some of them were questioned wondering if they would succeed.
The Dolphins have to find the right coach. Someone who will bring in quality coaches and a plan how to get the team to succeed on the field. Some say the Dolphins job is one of the worst jobs available and they may be right, but on the other hand why wouldn’t a coach want this job? Especially a first-time head coach? It would be a chance to rebuild the Dolphins and put your stamp on the team. A new coach if he hires the right coaches can turn the defense into whatever scheme he would like since there isn’t much talent on that side of the ball and the same with the offense. I know coaches like to go where the quarterback is, but that’s taking the easy way out. Belichick didn’t have Tom Brady when he first got to the Patriots. He drafted him in the 6th round of the 2000. A new coach can find his quarterback instead of inheriting one because sometimes when you have a quarterback it doesn’t work out with the new coach for whatever reason. If I was someone looking to become a head coach, I would love the challenge of rebuilding the Dolphins and establishing something. That’s what the new coach should looks at and for the Dolphins it’s all about finding the right guy.
