Tua Tagovailoa was drafted fifth overall by the Miami Dolphins during the 2020 NFL Draft.

After an impressive period in college with Alabama, Tua was seen as one of the top prospects in the draft.

However, a hip injury he suffered whilst in college was still an issue in his rookie season.

Tua still managed 11 touchdowns and 5 interceptions but was benched twice. The injury was clearly still affecting him, with a lack of a deep ball. Tua also had somewhat of a level of fortune, with several missed interceptions by opposition defenses.

The future of quarterbacks such as Aaron Rodgers and, in particular, Deshaun Watson is up in the air. This has led to much media speculation over Tua’s future.

With Miami players back in minicamp, this has led to plenty of media spotlight on the Hawaii native.

Tua had a mixed week of minicamp. Is it time for Dolphins fans to panic, or is it an overreaction?

Reason To Panic After The First Week Of Minicamp

Tua’s poor performance on the first day sent social media into a frenzy, where he threw for 5 interceptions in a wet and wild Miami.

The weather has been blamed for Tua’s poor first day of minicamp. However, it cannot be ignored as there has to be an element of concern considering the rain that Miami will likely play in at some point in 2021.

When Tua came into the NFL, one aspect of his game that was seen as his biggest strength was his accuracy. Throwing 5 interceptions without the pass rush present in the regular season has to be something to worry the front office and head coach Brian Flores.

Miami’s head coach is no stranger to making quick decisions, as we saw with the benching of Tua for Fitzpatrick in 2020.

The struggles in 2020 and the opening day of minicamp will play on the back of the minds of the Dolphins’ coaching staff.

An Overreaction? Reason To Have Faith

Day 1 may not have gone to plan, but day 2 saw a much bigger improvement from Tagovailoa.

Tua threw 6 touchdowns and 0 interceptions and was referred to as “electric.”

Brian Flores spoke of how he wanted to see Tua make more aggressive throws, something we didn’t see in his rookie year.

This is a reason for fans not to get too down about the opening day of minicamp. If Tua is to make mistakes, then the offseason is the perfect time for this.

With new weapons such as Jaylen Waddle and Will Fuller and the returning Albert Wilson, these players all need time to adjust to the left arm of Tua.

Miami’s QB needs to get time to develop a relationship with these players, working out what works and what doesn’t.

Existing players on offense, such as DeVante Parker, Preston Williams, and Mike Gesicki, also need time to develop their relationship with Tua.

There is plenty of time between now and the opening game of the 2021 season. It is yet to be determined how the Dolphins’ new playbook will look on offense after the departure of Chan Gailey.

It is something that the whole offense needs to get used to, learning new plays and making adjustments.

To those fans who have faith in Tua, the second day showed plenty of encouragement that he is the guy. For those who are less optimistic about the former Alabama QB, there is room for caution after how the opening day went. However, Tua bounced back on day two.

Whichever side fans are on, there is a definite reason for both caution and optimism.

With 84 days left before Miami open their 2021 campaign on the road in New England, this period couldn’t come any quicker in what is the most optimistic fans have been of the team’s season in years.
