The Miami Dolphins lost a hearting breaking game to the Buffalo Bills on the final play of the game, in which the Bills kicked a 25-yard field goal to win 32-29. The Dolphins played an excellent hard-fought game in the elements in Buffalo but fell short. The Dolphins overcame a 21-13 halftime deficit to take a 29-21 lead in the 4th quarter but lost the lead and eventually the game. There are no moral victories for the Dolphins playing well in this game. It ultimately comes down to winning or losing.

In the end, the area that came back to bite the Dolphins was their inability to score touchdowns in the red zone in the first half. The Dolphins were in the red zone on their second offensive possession and got all the way down to the Bills 11-yard line, and ended up settling for a field goal. Then later in the 2nd quarter, the Dolphins got inside the 10-yard line and had a drop by Trent Sherfield in the endzone. Once again, the Dolphins came away with 3 points instead of 7. On the other hand, the Bills had three possessions in the red zone and scored three touchdowns, including the last play of the first half, to go up 21-13.

One thing the Dolphins have to do when playing good-quality opponents on the road is score touchdowns when they get in the red zone. It hurt them against the Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings earlier this season, both games that they could have won if they got touchdowns in the red zone instead of settling for field goals or coming away with no points. It’s something the Dolphins will have to do if they are not only going to make the playoffs but have a chance to win a game or two on the road.

This game would have been different at the end if the Dolphins had touchdowns, and it’s an entirely different story today, but just like the Bills in the first game, when they didn’t take advantage of their opportunities to score and didn’t, the Dolphins fell short in that regard. The game was in their grasp, and they let it slip away. The Bills have been here and are going to the playoffs for the fourth straight, which isn’t easy. The Dolphins are trying to become a consistent playoff team and a contender, but they are going through the growing pains of trying to become one. The Dolphins look like they have closed the gap on the Bills, but if they are going to get over the hump in December and January, they must close the deal in a game like this when opportunities come.
