Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network is reporting the Miami Dolphins have requested to interview Chargers assistant secondary coach Tom Donatell for their secondary coach job. Tom Donatell is the son of recently fired Vikings defensive coordinator Ed Donatell. Ed Donatell was Fangio’s defensive coordinator in Denver when he was the head coach. Also, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley runs the exact defense Vic Fangio will run in Miami, as Staley has worked with Fangio previously in Chicago and Denver. So, it’s not surprising that Fangio would be interested in adding Donatell to his staff as he is familiar with the scheme Miami will install.

He played college football at Iowa from 2012-2015, playing both Linebacker and Safety. Prior to joining the Chargers, Tom coached with Seattle as a quality control/defensive assistant from 2017-2020. With the Chargers, he is credited with working with Derwin James and having him get voted to the Pro Bowl and Asante Samuel Jr who was offensive rookie of the month of September with two interceptions.

No word if Miami was granted permission for the interview, but since this would be seen as a step up and a better job, most likely, the Chargers wouldn’t hold Donatell back from taking the interview
