Should Miami Trade for Haason Reddick?

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported on Tuesday morning that the NY Jets have given Haason Reddick permission to seek a trade with another team. Reddick signed with super-agent Drew Rosenhaus on Monday in hopes of resolving the issues he has had with the Jets since being traded to NY back in the spring.

The questions now are: Who will want to trade for Reddick, who has missed an entire training camp and hasn’t played since last season, and should the Miami Dolphins consider trading for him?

We must acknowledge that teams in the same division trading with one another are rare but not unheard of. It does happen more often than not. Second, if Miami has the best offer, the Jets will most likely jump on that to get maximum value for a player who never played a single down for them.

Would the Jets want “more” and put a “tax” on the Dolphins because they play in the same division? Possibly, but even so, the two teams, who are both under .500 at this time and not looking like playoff teams, shouldn’t let that prevent them from pulling the trigger on a trade if it makes sense for both sides. (I mean, we did see Miami trade DeVante Parker to the Patriots not that long ago)

So, why would Miami be interested in Reddick?

For one, they just lost their best edge rusher, Jaelan Phillips, for the remainder of the season.

Second, there is no time frame for when Bradley Chubb will return to the field for the Dolphins.

Third, Miami tried to trade for Matthew Judon in August, but the Falcons came in with a better offer. So, we know Chris Grier was worried about the edge rusher position and tried adding a veteran player there, even with Phillips and Chubb on this roster, and expected to come back. Now we know Phillips won’t play again in 2024, so we have to factor that in on any decision regarding Reddick.

Fourth, despite how poorly Miami has played this season, they are a “win now” team in their winning window and not a team that will blow it up at any point soon and start a rebuild. It should be considered if adding Reddick can help them get into the playoff hunt, even as a wild-card team.

I have no idea what a realistic trade for Haason Reddick is. I would think compensation-wise, it wouldn’t take much since the team trading for Reddick also has to give him a big-money contract extension; hence, no team will want to part with a high pick and a huge contract. Would a conditional 5th-round pick get the deal done?

Maybe a 4th round pick?

The Jets gave up a conditional 3rd round pick to acquire Reddick on April 1st. So you would think they would want to recoup at least that, but they are not in a position of power right now so the leverage is with Reddick and any team he can work out a trade with.

It will be interesting to see if Miami has any interest, but we do know Chris Grier likes to trade for disgruntled players and then break the bank and give them new contracts.

Will Reddick be the next in line for that?
