Marco Rubio jokes he Won’t Be Miami’s Next Head Coach
Back on Jan. 8, the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel, and fans on X didn’t wait to wildly speculate about who his replacement would be. Even the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, jokingly shut down any notion that he would succeed McDaniel or become the team’s next general manager.

Rubio, a long-time politician, has deep ties to Florida. He’s actually a Miami native and represented the Sunshine State in the United States Senate for more than 10 years before President Donald Trump nominated him to be Secretary of State in 2025.
When Rubio made his above comments on X, Miami had openings at both the head coach and general manager positions, but one of those slots has since been filled. Green Bay Packers director of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan has been brought on to head the Dolphins’ front office as their general manager. Sullivan spent more than 20 years with the Packers, and the team earned one Super Bowl title and six appearances in the NFC Championship Game during his tenure.
As for the Dolphins’ search for a new head coach, that’s still ongoing, though it’s safe to claim that Rubio won’t be replacing McDaniel. However, Miami has already held interviews with multiple candidates at this juncture and expressed interest in several more. Kevin Stefanski — the former head coach of the Cleveland — actually just recently interviewed for the job, and he would be a solid plan B option assuming the Dolphins don’t land John Harbaugh. After all, he’s someone with not only head-coaching experience at the NFL level but playoff experience.
Hopefully, whoever the Dolphins decide to hire will lead the team to a level of success in the 2026 season that will satisfy Rubio and other fans. Miami will try to get back in the playoffs after it’s missed out on postseason play in each of the last two campaigns.
