Should The Dolphins Use Next Weeks Draft To Acquire More Picks Next Year?

Should The Dolphins Use Next Weeks Draft To Acquire More Picks Next Year?

Next week, the Miami Dolphins will add many players in the NFL Draft to fill their roster. Right now, they have 11 picks going into the draft, including 7 of the 94 picks. They are in a good spot to add a bunch of young, cheaper talent.

Let’s be real about the cheap part: the Dolphins are taking their hits from the salary cap hell former GM Chris Grier left this franchise in, as they are taking on over $170 million in dead cap money.

For that reason, the Dolphins are in this rebuilding mode led by GM Jon Eric Sullivan. Sully comes from the Green Bay Packers, who are known for building their teams through the draft and, for the most part, for not being as aggressive in free agency. That is how Sully will be for the next couple of years, at least. With Sully liking to get as many bites as possible at the apple, it makes me wonder if he is going to try to get more picks for next?

With 11 picks and the Dolphins in a clear rebuilding mode, it’s most likely that the Dolphins will trade down rather than up in this upcoming draft. Some have the Dolphins trading up, but I don’t see it, at least in the first few rounds anyway. The Dolphins could look to trade back with their second 1st round pick at 30.

The late 1st round is where some teams like to trade back into the back end of the 1st round to get a player they like and get a player with a 5th year option.

Last year, the Atlanta Falcons traded back into the 1st round with the Los Angeles Rams and gave them a future 1st-round pick. Would Sully be tempted to do the same thing if an offer came his way? I would think so, because the Dolphins aren’t a player away and are nowhere near ready to compete for a championship, let alone a playoff spot. Sully must look at the future in this draft with the players he picks and possibly adding future picks.

One way the Dolphins got an extra 3rd-round pick this year was by trading out of the 3rd round last year and receiving a 3rd-round pick this year. With four 3rd-round picks this year, Sully could potentially investigate a deal like that. He has stated that he wants to build his team primarily through the draft, and this would help this year and set them up for next year as well.

There has been a lot of discussion about how teams feel that next year’s crop of talent is better than this year’s. Now I know people will say that’s next year, and that’s true. Plus, the NFL is a year-to-year league when teams will fire coaches after 1 year and even GMs, but I don’t think that is the case with the Dolphins unless there is an unexpected fallout within the organization or an off-the-field incident.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross will give Sully and his staff some extra time, given the state of the team. With Sully wanting to build this team for the years to come, it makes sense that the Dolphins could trade down to get extra picks next year, since the quarterback class is expected to be better, as are other positions.

The one thing is that nothing is guaranteed by doing this. Last year, it was said the quarterback class would be better this year, and right now it’s considered one of the worst in recent memory. Sully must weigh his options and keep an open mind about this.

There also could be a team in a desperate situation, needing to win now that he could take advantage of. It will be one of the things I look forward to next week: how Sully is going to approach the draft and how he might address possible trades if one becomes available.
