NFL Insider Says Miami Will Have Interest in Brendan Sorsby in Supplemental Draft

NFL Insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated believes that if Brendan Sorsby enters the supplemental draft as expected, four teams will be very interested in him. The Browns, Jets, Cardinals, and, yes, the Miami Dolphins.

The Sorsby situation is a messy one, as he is currently under investigation by the NCAA and state gaming regulators for a gambling scandal involving thousands of bets.

Per an ESPN article: “Sorsby had accounts with sportsbooks and daily fantasy operators in several states, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the matter, who described him as a high-volume, low-stakes bettor, meaning he placed many wagers for small amounts. Some of his bets were placed using an account under a different name, multiple sources said.”

Another report said Sorsby placed over 10,000 bets, averaging around 20 per day, with many of the best being for small amounts of money.

What gets tricky is that, as a freshman at Indiana, Sorsby bet on his own team, which, per NCAA rules, is cause for an automatic ban and permanent ineligibility.

At this time, there is no evidence that Sorsby was fixing games or shaving points on any of his bets.

It is expected that the NCAA will ban Sorsby from playing college football and prevent him from getting on the field this season.

Sorsby started his college career at Indiana and spent two seasons there before transferring to Cincinnati, where he has spent the last two seasons.

This past offseason, he transferred to Texas Tech with a big NIL deal.

Sorsby is considered one of the best quarterbacks in college football, was entering this season as a Heisman Candidate, and is expected to be drafted in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft.

In 2025, in 12 games for Cincinnati, Sorsby threw 27 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions, totaling 2,800 passing yards. He also rushed for 580 yards and 9 touchdowns.

When it comes to the Supplemental Draft, there hasn’t been a high-profile player in this draft in many years.

Benrie Kosasr and Steve Walsh are probably the last two big-name quarterbacks to be taken in the Supplemental draft, and that is going back to the 1980s.

Bernie Kosar was selected by Cleveland in Round 1 of the Supplemental Draft in 1985.

Steve Walsh was selected by Dallas in Round 1 of the Supplemental Draft in 1989.

Sorsby’s talent isn’t in question; if he had come out last season, he would most likely have been a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Nobody is questioning his talent on the field. He may have been a Top 5 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

But the gambling situation does muddy the water.

Can you trust him?

Can he stop gambling moving forward?

And while someone will take a shot on him in the Supplemental Draft, I would be very surprised if Miami were that team.

Jon-Eric Sullivan has done a fantastic job this offseason running off the knuckleheads and jokers who have littered this Dolphins roster the past few seasons.

The guys who maybe didn’t take things as seriously as they should, and now you’re going to bring in a player who has a gambling problem and is about to be banned by the NCAA?

We all know the odds are high that Miami will take a quarterback in Round 1 of the 2027 NFL Draft, which is going to be loaded with top quarterback talent.

Even if Malik Willis plays well, if Miami has a top pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, as many expect, you don’t plan on picking high in Round 1 often, so you don’t pass on the chance to land a top quarterback prospect.

Guys like Dante Moore, Arch Manning, CJ Carr, Julian Sayin, and LaNorris Sellers should all go in Round 1 and probably the top half of Round 1. Selecting

Taking Sorsbey in the Supplemental Draft, even if you take him in Round 3 or 4, probably takes you out of the market for taking one of those other quarterbacks in Round 1 who will enter the league with less drama and without a black cloud hanging over their heads.

This is going to be a very interesting story to follow over the next few months.

For one, does more information come out on Sorsby that makes this situation look far worse than it currently does?

Will the NFL let him enter the supplemental draft?

And if he is in the draft, will a team roll the dice on him, and how early?

I could easily see a team use a 2nd round pick on him, especially as Breer says a team that maybe “expects” to be good this year and will be picking in the 20s, like a Pittsburgh or Minnesota, knowing a talent like Sorsby normally would have no shot to be there when they are normally picking, and they have the chance to get him here.

But will the four teams expected to be really bad in 2026, NYJ, Arizona, Miami, and Cleveland roll the dice or will they pass on Sorsby and see how things shake out next April in 2027 with the other quarterbacks?
