Why the Dolphins Are Still Britain’s NFL Team

The night Wembley got its first proper NFL game

October 28, 2007. Rain came down on Wembley, a pitch that looked more like a farmyard by the fourth quarter, and 80,000-odd British people who had mostly never watched a full NFL game in their lives. That was the first regular season NFL game ever played outside the United States, and Miami was one of the two teams sent over to do it.

They lost, of course. Giants 13, Dolphins 10. Eli Manning ran one in from ten yards and New York ground out 189 yards on the floor because nobody could throw the ball in that weather anyway. And that Miami side went on to win exactly one game the whole season, so it was not like Britain was receiving the vintage stuff.

Here is the odd part though. It did not matter one bit.

If you go on any UK NFL forum today and ask people how they picked their team, a surprising number of them say the same thing. They watched that Wembley game on Channel 5 or whatever it was, they had no idea what a down was, and they just picked one of the two teams on the screen. Half of them picked the Giants. The other half went aqua and orange and have been suffering ever since. Welcome to the club, lads.

Miami kept getting sent back

The league clearly decided Miami were good travellers, because they kept posting them abroad. Seven regular season games outside the States now. Five in London, one in Frankfurt, one up in Toronto back in the day. Only a couple of franchises have done more miles.

2014 was the good one. Wembley, sold out, Ryan Tannehill throwing it around and the Dolphins battering Oakland 38-14 in a game that was basically over by half time. British Fins fans still bring that afternoon up. It was the first time a lot of them had actually seen their team win one in person, which when you support Miami is not nothing.

2017 went the other way completely. Drew Brees and the Saints came over and shut Miami out 20-0 at Wembley, a truly grim watch. The ESPN recap is still up if you feel like ruining your afternoon. Jay Cutler was the quarterback that day, which tells you plenty on its own.

Then Madrid last year, because the league is definitely not done exporting this team anywhere with a big stadium and a spare Sunday.

Being a Fins fan in Britain is a bit of a job

People in Florida do not always get how weird the schedule is for the UK. A 1pm kickoff in Miami is 6pm in London, which is fine, that is the easy one. The late window puts you at 9.25pm, which is still doable if you have got nothing on Monday. Then you get the Sunday night game landing at 1.30am, and Monday Night Football at 2.15am, and at that point you are making a genuine life decision about whether this team deserves your Tuesday.

Most of them do it anyway. There are separate Dolphins supporters groups in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast, all meeting in some pub that has agreed to keep a screen on for eleven people in aqua jerseys while everyone else watches the football. Real football, as the barman keeps calling it.

And every single one of those meetups is built around phones. That is just the truth of watching this league from another timezone.

Everything happens on the phone now

Nobody in the UK watches an NFL Sunday on one screen. RedZone is on the telly if you are lucky, but the phone has the fantasy app, the group chat that has been going since 2011, the box score you keep refreshing, and the highlight clip your mate sent you eleven seconds after it happened.

So by 2am on a Monday, when the game has gone to hell and Miami are down three scores and you are still awake for absolutely no good reason, the phone is doing most of the entertaining. Some people go on forums. Some people go and argue with strangers. And a fair few UK fans just flick over to a mobile casino UK site for a few spins while the fourth quarter runs itself out, because at least the slots do not blow a fourteen point lead. Jackpot Mobile Casino is one that gets mentioned a lot in the UK crowd, mostly because it runs straight from the browser with no app faff, and it holds a proper UK Gambling Commission licence rather than one of those offshore jobs. Sensible enough for a 2am scroll.

Then the game ends, you go to bed angry, and you do it all again the next week. That is the deal.

No Miami on the 2026 slate, sadly

The 2026 London games are Colts and Commanders, Eagles and Jaguars, then Texans and Jaguars at Wembley in October. No Dolphins anywhere on the list, which is a bit of a shame given they are the reason half the crowd is there in the first place.

They will be back. They always come back. And when they do, there will be a queue outside Wembley full of people in throwback jerseys who picked this team in the rain in 2007 and have been paying for it ever since. Honestly, that is a better fanbase than most teams get for free.
