Dolphins QB Quinn Ewers Out at Least One Week With Groin Injury

Dolphins QB Quinn Ewers Out at Least One Week With Groin Injury

The Miami Dolphins will be without backup quarterback Quinn Ewers for at least the next week after the second-year signal-caller suffered a groin injury during Friday night’s 20-7 preseason loss to the Washington Commanders.

Ewers suffered the injury early in his appearance against Washington but remained in the game. He is now considered week-to-week and is expected to miss at least one week, putting him on track to miss Miami’s next preseason game against the New York Giants on Saturday, August 22.

The injury could also help explain Ewers’ rough performance against Washington. He completed just 1 of 8 passes for 27 yards with one interception, finishing the night with a 1.6 passer rating. Ewers eventually gave way to Cam Miller.

It’s unfortunate timing for Ewers, who entered training camp firmly in the mix to serve as Malik Willis‘ primary backup this season.

The Dolphins selected Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he gained valuable experience late in his rookie season. Ewers appeared in four games and made three starts, completing 55 of 83 passes for 622 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

His development continued throughout the offseason, with head coach Jeff Hafley speaking positively about the progress Ewers had made entering his second NFL season. With Willis established as Miami’s starter, Ewers appeared positioned to settle into an important backup role.

Dolphins Bring Back Mark Gronowski

Miami wasted little time adding another quarterback following Ewers’ injury.

The Dolphins brought back rookie quarterback Mark Gronowski on Sunday to provide additional depth behind Willis and Cam Miller while Ewers is sidelined. Gronowski had previously spent training camp with Miami before being let go on August 7.

With Ewers unavailable, Miller should have an opportunity to receive additional practice and preseason snaps. Gronowski gives Miami another arm as the Dolphins prepare for joint practices and their preseason matchup with the Giants.

Could Ewers Return Before the Regular Season?

The encouraging news is that the injury does not currently appear to threaten Ewers’ availability for the beginning of the regular season.

While Ewers is expected to miss the Giants game, he could return for Miami’s preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, August 28, depending on how quickly his groin responds to treatment.

The Dolphins know how quickly quarterback depth can become an issue.

Even with a rough outing Friday night, Ewers showed enough as a rookie to give Miami confidence that he can step onto the field if needed, and preserving that depth is more important than getting him additional preseason snaps while dealing with an injury.

For now, Willis remains Miami’s unquestioned starter, while Miller and Gronowski should see increased work until Ewers is cleared to return.

The Dolphins will hope Ewers’ absence is short and that their backup quarterback can return to the field before Miami opens the 2026 regular season.
