BREAKING: Dolphins Acquire QB Kyle McCord in Trade With Packers
The Miami Dolphins didn’t wait long to address their suddenly vacant backup quarterback position.
According to multiple reports, the Green Bay Packers are trading quarterback Kyle McCord to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick.
The move comes one day after Miami traded quarterback Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2028 sixth-round selection.
In essence, general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has flipped Ewers into McCord while reshaping the quarterback room behind starter Malik Willis.
And there is certainly a Green Bay flavor developing in Miami.
Dolphins Add Another Former Packers Quarterback
McCord becomes the second former Packers quarterback on Miami’s roster, joining Willis, who signed with the Dolphins this offseason and will enter the 2026 season as the team’s starter.
The connection between the two organizations runs much deeper than the quarterbacks.
Sullivan spent more than two decades in the Packers organization before becoming Miami’s general manager, while Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley served as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator.
That familiarity makes the McCord trade an intriguing move for Miami.
The Dolphins know the organization McCord is coming from, and Sullivan should have a strong understanding of how Green Bay viewed McCord and his development.

Who is Kyle McCord?
McCord entered the NFL as a sixth-round selection of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The 6-foot-3 quarterback spent his rookie season on Philadelphia’s practice squad before signing a reserve/future contract with Green Bay in January.
McCord had an impressive college career that included stops at Ohio State and Syracuse.
After starting for the Buckeyes in 2023, McCord transferred to Syracuse and put together a huge 2024 season.
He completed 391 passes for an ACC single-season record 4,779 yards while throwing 34 touchdown passes. He finished his college career with 8,555 passing yards and 61 touchdowns.
McCord also showed promise with Green Bay this preseason and put himself in position to compete for a roster spot behind Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor.
Now, instead of remaining in Green Bay, he gets a fresh opportunity in Miami.
Miami Quickly Replaces Quinn Ewers
The timing of this trade is particularly interesting.
Miami sent Ewers to Jacksonville on Saturday after the former Texas quarterback struggled with injuries and consistency during training camp.
That move left Willis as Miami’s starter with Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski as the other quarterbacks on the roster.
It was difficult to imagine the Dolphins entering Week 1 with either Miller or Gronowski as the primary backup to Willis.
Now we know why Miami was comfortable moving Ewers.
The Dolphins clearly had another move in mind.
McCord gives Miami another young quarterback to develop, but one who comes from an organization Sullivan knows extremely well.
Dolphins Continue Building Around Malik Willis
There is also something interesting about Miami pairing Willis and McCord.
Both quarterbacks spent time in Green Bay’s system, although at different times, and both now find themselves reunited with Sullivan in Miami.
Willis is unquestionably the starter entering the season, but the Dolphins needed an insurance policy behind him.
McCord isn’t an established NFL starter, but he offers developmental upside and had an impressive enough preseason to generate discussion about whether Green Bay could risk exposing him to waivers.
Miami eliminated that possibility by making the trade.
Instead of hoping McCord became available, Sullivan surrendered a future sixth-round selection to ensure the Dolphins got their quarterback.
Dolphins Turn Ewers Into McCord
The two quarterback trades occurring within roughly a day of each other make the entire sequence even more interesting.
Miami received a 2028 sixth-round pick for Ewers and is now sending a 2028 sixth-round selection to Green Bay for McCord.
Essentially, the Dolphins have replaced Ewers with McCord at little to no cost in terms of overall draft capital.
The new regime clearly preferred McCord as its developmental quarterback behind Willis.
Now the Dolphins will enter the 2026 season with a quarterback room featuring two former Packers.
And with Sullivan and Hafley continuing to put their fingerprints on this roster, the Green Bay-to-Miami pipeline remains very much alive.
