Dolphins Need Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon to Step Up Without De’Von Achane

Going into training camp, the Miami Dolphins‘ running back position was considered one of the deepest on the team. For good reason: De’Von Achane, Jaylen Wright, and Ollie Gordon. The problem is we haven’t seen much from Wright or Gordon because Achane is the number 1 back and can run and catch the ball out of the backfield.

A few years ago, former GM Chris Grier traded a future 3rd-round pick in the 2024 draft to take Wright in the 4th round. Wright has talent, but it hasn’t shown consistently on the field. He has the speed to break a long run and can catch the ball out of the backfield. He did well in a game filling in for an injured Achane in 2024 but hasn’t seen much action since, and now he is dealing with an injury.

The Dolphins drafted Gordon in the 7th round of the 2025 draft to be the power back in the short-yardage situation and, like Wright, has flashed but hasn’t shown anything consistently. He played well when Achane got hurt on Sunday, before leaving with leg cramps in the 4th quarter.

However, now that Achane is done for the season, it’s time for one of these guys to step up and show what they can do. The bottom line: Jon Eric Sullivan didn’t draft either of these guys. They were inherited, and with the Dolphins in full rebuild mode, it’s fair to wonder whether either of them has a future with the team. It’s only a matter of time before Sully looks for skill position players in the next year or two after building the offensive line.

Both of these guys are talented running backs, and each brings a different skill set. What I want to see is more consistency than flash. At some point, the light has to go on with these guys, and now is their opportunity. Like a lot of other players inherited by Sully, they aren’t on scholarship, and after the season, if neither shows they can fill in for Achane, then it’s time to move on.

I want to see these guys in an expanded role now, and they have 14 games to show what they can do. Step up.
