The Miami Dolphins, at the time of writing, occupy the sixth overall pick ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft at the end of the month.

After initially occupying the third overall pick, the Dolphins traded this to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for three first-rounders across 2021, 2022, and 2023.

On the same day, Miami used the twelfth pick they acquired from the 49ers. They used it to move up to number 6 after a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

This has left a huge question for Dolphins fans. Who do they take with the sixth overall pick?

I did a poll on Twitter to see which player fans would take with the pick.

Only four options were allowed, which meant the contenders were Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, Kyle Pitts, and Penei Sewell. So why should the Dolphins take each player? And who do the fans want?

Ja’Marr Chase (Wide Receiver)

The LSU wideout is seen as the best prospect in the position, with a pro day that matched it.

Coming in at 6”1 and 210 pounds, Chase has the physique to adapt to the league straight away. Pro days should be taken with a pinch of salt because there is no opposition player to go up against. However, what Chase showed was certainly impressive. Chase certainly showcased his ability from his 40-yard dash and vertical jump to the hands that were on display.

He may have sat out the 2020 season, but Chase had 2019 to remember, recording 20 touchdowns and 1,780 receiving yards.

Chase may have only had one season as a starter but has shown all the credentials of being a number one receiver.

He would be a great fit for this Dolphins offense, alongside DeVante Parker and new signing Will Fuller. This would give quarterback Tua Tagovailoa some great weapons to throw to.

DeVonta Smith (Wide Receiver)

Heismann Trophy winner Smith is the next best option if Chase is taken during the first five picks.

Jaylen Waddle has been talked up by some Dolphins fans, who feel he should be the player Miami takes with the sixth overall pick. This is despite lesser college numbers than Smith and Chase. These two are the best wide receiver options for Miami and any team looking to take a wide receiver.

“Chase is the best prospect, but I also really like that Smith has a history with Tua that they can build off of. I would be thrilled with either”, one Dolphins fan stated.

Physique has been an area of concern for many, with his 175-pound build. Despite this, Smith still managed to record 3,112 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns across 2019 and 2020.

Can he translate this to the NFL? If he is going to then, he has a great chance to succeed. He will be playing under a great head coach in Brian Flores and playing with a former teammate in Tua.

Kyle Pitts (Tight End)

This is one of the more intriguing situations. Wide receiver and offensive line are areas of need. Meanwhile, a tight end seems to be a position that is less of an area of concern for fans. Miami’s Mike Gesicki has improved every year since coming into the NFL.

Pitts appears a luxury choice, someone that would be hard to pass upon. The Florida Gators star looks to be the best tight end prospect in years.

Pitts recorded 12 touchdowns and 770 receiving yards during 2020 in just 8 games.

From his wingspan and physique to his ability to catch the ball, Pitts appears to have everything. Coming in at 6”5 and 245 pounds, some argue that he is one of the best receivers in the draft despite being a tight end. He is being compared to Calvin Johnson. This shows the ability Pitts has at receiving, with blocking is the one area that Pitts would need to improve on.

Pitts can come in and make the Dolphins a great double-tight end threat. This is something we saw with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez with the New England Patriots. Gesicki and Pitts can form a great relationship lining up in 12 personnel.

Atlanta at number four seems the most likely team to take Pitts. There is the potential of teams trading up for a quarterback such as the Denver Broncos. If this were to happen, then there is a very high chance that Pitts will still be available at 6.

Penei Sewell (Offensive Lineman)

The Oregon lineman is viewed as a generational offensive line talent. Many feel that Sewell will not be there by the time the sixth pick comes around. The Cincinnati Bengals are seen as the team most likely to take him at 5.

There is a growing feeling amongst some Dolphins fans that Sewell is someone that they feel their team will have no option other than to draft, should he be available.

“Jaylen Waddle, but if Sewell happens to fall to us, I might have to reconsider,” one Dolphins fan told in the comments section of the poll.

In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys took CeeDee Lamb in the first round. This is despite an already talented offense, with the receiver seen as too good to pass up.

Despite the Dolphins’ having more of a need for receivers, either Sewell or Pitts could be players that the Dolphins take with the sixth overall pick.

Results Of The Poll

The poll received 1,129 votes, and it is clear to see from the results that Dolphins fans want.

With 58.1%, Pitts received most of the votes, with Chase in second place with 26.3%. Sewell (6.8%) and Smith (8.8%) also received some backing but nowhere near as much as Pitts and Chase.

From the poll and the comments, it is evident that the majority of Miami Dolphins fans want offensive weapons for Tua. This was an area that struggled in 2020, with Miami’s two best wide receivers missing a combined total of 20 games.

Any of these four options would significantly improve this Dolphins offense. Either player should have fans excited over what is to come in 2021 and beyond.
